ABSTRACT: The recent security concerns around the cooling system failures at the Brown’s Ferry Nuclear Plant and the release of the DHS Video on “Hacking the GRID” has awaken many control engineers to the scary world of industrial cyber security. Control systems are often considered immune to network attacks, but these incidents, along with at least 120 other documented events, indicates this complacency is misplaced.
In this workshop we look at why isolating control and SCADA systems from the outside world is difficult, and why standard firewalls are not the whole answer. We will see how companies can create a cost effective defense-in-depth solution using industrial firewalls designed with environment, staff capabilities and industry needs in mind.
